For the patriarch of the Kurra family, Mikko, the bitter Finnish frost renders him housebound, and he decides it is time to come clean and reveal to his children his rare genetic disease they may have inherited. His son, recently returned from a self-imposed exile abroad, and his independence-seeking teenage daughter Pihla, are forced to reevaluate their aspirations as the two come to a new understanding of their father’s plight. Only eight year-old adopted daughter, Lumi, an orphan from China, is immune to the threat, but even she starts to sense the tension in the family and decides to take action. Sometimes there is nothing left to do but dig a rabbit hole to China to your roots
A vivid family drama counter to stereotype, about a “normal” Finnish family, is sensitively directed by first-timer Saara Saarela and beautifully photographed by Rauno Ronkainen.
